The National Museum of Indonesia was founded in 1778 and its original name was the Natural History Museum. Initially the museum collection belonged to Jacob Cornelis Ledermacher and his family.

Due to the increase in the collection of these grants, the Dutch government established a museum in 1862, which officially opened in 1868 and is housed in what is now the National Museum of Indonesia.
