History of the Mpu Tantular Museum

History of the Mpu Tantular Museum – The Mpu Tantular Museum is a very interesting cultural destination to explore. The name of this museum is taken from the name of Mpu Tantullah, a famous ancient writer who played an important role in Javanese literature.

History of the Mpu Tantular Museum

weaverhallmuseum – The Mpu Tantura Museum is a museum located in Sidoarjo, East Java, Indonesia. This museum was originally founded in 1933 as the Soerabaia City History Museum by a German collector named Godfried Hariowald von Faber. This museum was officially opened on July 25, 1937.

Von Farber started by buying a new building on Jalan Simpang (now Jalan Pemuda 3 Surabaya), which was funded by funds collected from the community. This museum has a collection room, library, office space and auditorium. Mr. von Faber also developed international relations to develop the museum. But before that dream could come true, von Faber died on September 30, 1955.

After von Faber left, the museum was abandoned for some time and much of its collection was lost. The museum was then managed by the Public Education Foundation. Dr. M Soetopo.

The Directorate General of Museums was established at the Ministry of Education and Culture, and the government began to pay more attention to museums.

The General Education Museum was finally opened to the public on May 23, 1972 under the name “East Java Museum”.
Next, efforts began to be made to transfer these cultural facilities to the regional government of East Java province.

On November 1, 1974, this museum was handed over by the General Education Foundation to the local government and inaugurated as the “Mpu Tantura East Java Provincial Museum”. This museum was then moved to a different location before settling on Jl. Raya Buduran, Sidoarjo, 14 May 2004. The name ‘Mpu Tantura’ was chosen to honor the Majapahit poet who was also the author of ‘Kakawin Arjunawijaya’ and ‘Sutasoma’.
